I have a Social and Economic Science Masters MSc [Econ] in Strategic Studies from the Department of International Politics in Aberystwyth where I took the Michael MccGwire Prize, along with a 1st Class Honours Degree BSc [Hons] in Fire Engineering and Management from UCLan where I became the first graduate take a First on that particular undergraduate course.
I am proud of my academic qualifications as I am a working class person from the Gasworks in Crindau in Newport South Wales, who has been fortunate to access Education and to gain experience with and through those qualifications. I am proud of my humble roots, as we have to know where we have come from to understand where we are going.
After 32 years in the Fire and Rescue Service where I reached a Senior Role, my main focus these days is on art and poetry. For a short time during my fire service career, I was a Trade Unionist advocating the employment rights of others and it is probable that this led to my interest in Human Rights legislation; especially the 'right to a private life'. Prior to leaving the Fire and Rescue Service I was employed as the Corporate Head of Civil Contingencies and Resilience and attended many Gold Command meetings in South Wales, and Mid and West Wales during the H1N1 crisis. Today I am more interested in painting with watercolours or acrylics, or drawing with pencil, inktense pencil, watercolour pencils, soft pastels, or charcoal.
